Wheel Throwing Lessons

  • Wheel Throwing Lessons Available!

Ready to get your hands muddy? Our wheel throwing lessons are a fun, hands-on way to learn the art of creating pottery on the wheel.

Whether you’re a total beginner or looking to refine your skills, our individualized instruction will guide you step-by-step as you shape, trim, and finish your own ceramic pieces.

Come discover the joy (and challenge!) of throwing clay—you’ll be amazed at what you can create!

Wheel Throwing 101 - Beginner Wheel Throwing Course

We are very intentional about cultivating a purposeful and welcoming pottery community at Once and Future Things. Because of this, new students are limited to five every other month. New students will be accepted in January, March, May, July, and September of 2026. We do not accept new students from October to December, so as to prioritize the work of our existing members during the holiday season.

Ready to finally get on the pottery wheel? Our 6-week beginner course is the perfect place to start your ceramic journey. You’ll learn foundational wheel-throwing techniques—centering, pulling, trimming, and attaching handles—while exploring your own creative voice in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Unlike most beginning pottery classes, we offer private or small-group instruction so you can learn directly at the wheel alongside your instructor, with personalized, step-by-step guidance in every session.

Start with an Introductory Session

All new students begin with a mandatory 2-hour Introductory Session. This session gives you the chance to try the pottery wheel, learn the basics, and get a feel for the studio before committing to the full course. If you decide to continue, the $45 will be applied toward the total course cost.

Course Price: $300 (+ tax) ($45 deposit via Introductory Session + $255 balance if you continue)

Payment plants are available—the remaining $255 can be split into two equal payments of $127.50 (+ tax)

What You’ll Learn

Basic throwing skills (centering, pulling, trimming, attaching handles), as well as:

  • How to glaze and finish your work

  • Clay stages and firing process

  • Optional surface design & hand-building techniques

  • Studio etiquette and how to work independently in a communal space

What You’ll Need

Clay and studio tools are provided, but students are encouraged to bring:

  • Sketchbook for ideas, glaze notes, and project tracking

  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty or an apron (It all washes out, you’ll just look like an artist when you leave!)

  • Close-toed shoes (Students who choose to wear anything other than close-toed shoes do so at their own risk and assume all responsibility for their footwear choices.)

  • Short and/or trimmed nails (We have nail clippers, but it is immensely difficult to throw on the wheel with long nails.)

Studio Culture

We value a respectful, community-minded space. All students are expected to clean up their station, be considerate of others using the studio, track their projects, and spend practice time outside of class (approximately three hours per week) to build their skills.

Course Schedule Includes:

  • Weekly 2-hour lessons (private or small group—prices listed above are per person)

  • Independent practice time

  • Final glazing session + firing of finished work

  • Full syllabus and calendar provided upon enrollment
